Project Timeline
  • September – December 2009
  • Promote Bridging the Gap through the IDEA Center Web site and Universal  Design Education Online Web site
  • Kick-off meeting at the 2009 NOMA Conference
  • Form Project Task Force
  • Develop plan of action
January – September 2010
  • Promote project among HBCU faculty and students
  • Curriculum development consultations with faculty at the HBCU architecture schools
  • IDeA Center staff site visits to participating HBCUs
  • Encourage student submissions to NOMA design competition
  • Highlight other exceptional student and faculty work on Universal Desgin
  • Expanding coverage and sharing among HBCUs about UD curriculum development and service learning projects
  • Determine mechanisms for perpetuation of the project after funding closes

October – December 2010
  • Follow-up meeting at the 2010 NOMA Conference that will include participating HBCU curriculum development presentations and review of work produced in the HBCU student design programs
  • Student exhibition at NOMA 2010 Conference
  • UD publication for distribution at the conference
  • Publication of project materials, including the student design projects, on the Bridging the Gap Web site
  • Project evaluation and final report

Project Strategies

During the life of the project, the Task Force is:

  1. Reviewing the accepted definition of Universal Design to ensure that it is relevant to the needs of minority and underserved communities in the United States;
  2. Developing a method to regularly recognize achievements in curriculum development at HBCUs and other participating colleges and universities;
  3. Developing an on-going support network for curriculum development at HBCUs and other participating colleges and universities.
